In 1892 Atlanta’s Plumbers Union had 42 members. During a severe depression during the late 1890′s , Local 72 became inactive. It was reorganized in 1902 as Plumbers, Steamfitters and Gas Fitters Local 72. Several local plumber and pipe fitter locals later became a part of Local 72, including local 261, Local 541, and Local 758. In January 1919 one hundred steamfitters broke away and formed a new Local 758. Local 72 was left with about 200 members after the split. The 1930′s and the New Deal then brought better times and greatly increased Local 72′s membership.
